In a bold move that has sparked widespread discussion, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has instructed the state's Education Commissioner to look into recent student protests involving the Austin Independent School District (AISD). This decision arises amidst growing concerns regarding immigration enforcement activities in the local community.
On Thursday and Friday, students from various schools across Central Texas took to the streets, leaving their classrooms in protest. According to reports, 14 different schools joined in these demonstrations aimed at voicing discontent over the recent immigration actions observed in the Austin area.
"I have directed the Education Commissioner to investigate this," Governor Abbott stated in a post on social media platform X on Friday evening. He emphasized that AISD receives taxpayer funding for educational purposes, not for facilitating protests, asserting, "Our schools are for educating our children, not political indoctrination. This is one of many reasons why AISD is losing so many students."
Austin ISD Superintendent Matias Segura communicated with parents through a letter on the same day, clarifying that while many students engaged in walkouts, the district did not sponsor or endorse these events. Segura pointed out that any student who chose to leave school grounds for such protests would be marked with an unexcused absence.
In his comprehensive letter addressed to the AISD community, Segura noted, "Today, students at 14 campuses participated in student-led protests related to immigration enforcement activities. While many of our students participated in walk-out demonstrations on campus, some students left our schools and gathered at the Texas Capitol." He reiterated that these actions were not sanctioned by the district, urging families to communicate expectations to their children during such events.
Segura further explained the district's commitment to student safety, stating, "During the school day, our students are our responsibility, and we’re committed to the safety of our students in our community, regardless if they are on our campus." He acknowledged, however, that the ability to ensure safety diminishes when students attend non-school-sanctioned events.
For families to make informed decisions, he highlighted several crucial points:
1. Staff members cannot physically stop a student from departing campus. Support from families is vital for guiding students through their responsibilities.
2. If a student leaves and does not return by the end of the school day, the administration will not be able to assist in their re-entry or safe return home.
3. Participation in protests during school hours will be classified as an unexcused absence.
The overarching goal, Segura concluded, is to ensure all students are safe and accounted for, and he expressed gratitude for the ongoing support from families, which helps maintain a secure and focused educational environment.
Notably, among the schools that witnessed student walkouts was McCallum High School. The principal confirmed that the initiative was entirely student-driven, with school resource officers present to oversee safety during the protests.
